Why guessing at supplements can make your sleep worse

If you're like I was when I couldn't sleep, you're probably taking all kinds of supplements to see if they will help. The problem with doing this is there are imbalances in your body that are causing your insomnia and taking supplements could make them even worse.

Melatonin

For example, you've probably tried melatonin to help you sleep. Melatonin will help if the only reason you aren't sleeping is because you don't have enough melatonin. Many of my clients are taking melatonin and they don't actually need it. Since melatonin is a hormone that needs to be in balance with other hormones, taking it when you don't need it can create even more imbalance. And it can also cause drowsiness and grogginess the next day.

Magnesium

Same with magnesium. Magnesium is super important for sleep and most people are deficient in it. But minerals all need to be in balance with each other. So supplementing with magnesium can be making those mineral imbalances even worse, which can contribute to not sleeping well. Usually my clients are also deficient in sodium and potassium. But some of them have too much sodium and potassium and need more calcium. Either way, only taking magnesium creates more imbalance. Everyone is different and the only way to tell what you need is to test.

To illustrate the importance of balance for hormones or minerals, it helps to compare it to music. All the instruments need to be playing in the same key, at the same volume, at the same speed for the music to sound beautiful. If one instrument plays out of tune or plays too loud or too fast, it's going to ruin the entire piece. It’s the same with our hormones and our minerals. It’s all about balance.

B vitamins

As another example, you may be taking B vitamins, especially if you know you have the MTHFR Gene. I had a client who was taking a really high dose of B vitamins and it turned out that they were causing anxiety and insomnia even though she was taking them for sleep!

Probiotics

Another surprising example is probiotics. Most people think that everyone should take a probiotic. I used to think this too. It turns out that some of my clients have too much bacteria in their gut, including the good guys. This bacterial overgrowth causes inflammation. Taking probiotics is just adding more fuel to that inflammation

Bone broth

If you're focusing on gut health, you might also be drinking bone broth. For most people this is fine. But for some people the L-glutamine in bone broth is converted to glutamate which is an excitatory neurotransmitter. Excess glutamate can lead to headaches, anxiety and insomnia.
