My (Long-@ss) Story

I've always loved sleep. Even as a teenager, I would go to bed at 10 o'clock every night because I wanted to get the sleep I needed. Well, that was during the week. The weekends were another story...In college, I learned not to sign up for 8am classes because I hated getting up early. And for a long time I worked nights but always made sure I could sleep in in the morning. 

So I was a night owl until I started working on an organic vegetable CSA farm about 10 years ago. I had to be there at 6:45am so I was up at 6. (I've also prioritized sleep over having a relaxing morning. So I like to sleep as long as possible and then get up and get going and get out the door.) It was a physically exhausting job, too, so I needed to sleep 8 hours to recover from the manual labor I was doing. So I made sure I went to bed by 10pm every night. That's pretty tough considering it's light until 10 in the summer in Wyoming. I remember having friends over for dinner. I would go to bed at 10pm and leave my friends and boyfriend still hanging out in my house. That's how much of a dork I am about my sleep!

My Sleep Issues

My insomnia started in late pregnancy which I attributed to hormones. And then even when my son Parker was 3 months old, he was waking up every 1-2 hours all night long. And a lot of the time I wouldn't be able to fall back asleep once he did. I would just lie there being miserable and wondering if I would ever get sleep again.

After Parker started sleeping through the night, though, I still was struggling to get a good night's sleep. I was going to bed early because I was always so exhausted. But it would take me forever to fall asleep. Almost every night. And then most nights I would wake up super early in the morning (3 or 4am) and not be able to go back to sleep. Even though I was still so exhausted.

My Journey

I first started learning about sleep when I decided to become a sleep consultant for babies and children. Long story short, my son Parker was a horrible sleeper when he was a baby. But I hired a sleep consultant, he started sleeping better, and it changed my life! (You can read that story here.)


After 2 years of working full-time, having a baby, starting my own business and not sleeping, I was desperate to figure out my sleep. I took the Solve Your Sleep certification course from Dana Obleman so I could learn how to fix my sleep. Within a few weeks of making some key changes, I went from sleeping poorly 6+ nights a week to sleeping great!


Now I fall asleep quickly at night and sleep until morning!

And I learned even more about sleep. Some surprising things I discovered are that the timing of what you eat can have a huge impact on how you sleep. Same with when you exercise. I studied sleeping pills and supplements, the history of sleep, how hormones affect sleep. All kinds of fascinating stuff! Did you know that humans used to go to bed at dark (before the invention of the light bulb), wake up in the night for an hour or two, and then go back to sleep again until morning?!

After becoming Solve Your Sleep certified and sleeping better, I went through a stressful time in my life and my insomnia came back. All the tricks I had learned didn't help me. I already had a M.S. in Holistic Nutrition so I knew that an unhealthy gut and out-of-balance hormones could cause insomnia. So I trained with Functional Diagnostic Nutrition to learn about lab testing for gut health, hormones, food sensitivities and minerals to find what's keeping me and my clients awake at night. I found out that I had hormone imbalance, food sensitivities and a parasite that were causing my insomnia. I corrected those and now I sleep great! I'm excited to help you find the root cause of your insomnia so you can get the sleep you need, too.


You already know how important sleep is to me. But not everyone makes sleep a priority in their lives. More than 1/3 of adults in the US are getting less than 7 hours of sleep a night! And that's a tragedy because not getting enough sleep doesn't just make you tired the next day. It affects your health in so many ways. As Matthew Walker says in his book Why We Sleep:

"...the shorter you sleep, the shorter your life. The leading causes of disease and death in developed nations-...heart disease, obesity, dementia, diabetes, and cancer-all have recognized links to a lack of sleep."



As you can tell, I love learning about sleep. It's so complicated in this day and age. But it's a biological process that our bodies want to do. And it should be really simple. 


I'm so happy that I get to help others get the sleep they need. Being exhausted and grumpy and forgetful every day is no fun. I want you to get the sleep you need so you can reach your goals and achieve your biggest dreams!
